Monday, July 2, 2001: (Excerpts from letter to Laila)
Tuesday I'm meeting with the director of the program (well, we all are meeting with her one on one), for the first two meetings about our placement. It seems early, but our sites have to prepare for our arrival on August 30th.
Preparing for the meeting has given me a chance to reflect on what I'm looking for. As far as location in Cote d'Ivoire, I don't have much preference. The north half is more arid, so the humidity is more tolerable. It's also predominantly Muslim, which has + and -. Negs are all the woman in power stuff. Pos is no drunk bastards harrassing you or proposing marriage. (Sober ones yes - but not drunks!)
