A Common Experience - August 17, 2002
Every so often I am reminded that I am not the first American to live in Africa, and that others have experienced these things that sometimes seem so foreign to me.
I have been reading The Ponds of Kalambayi by Mike Tidwell, a former Peace Corps Volunteer in the Democratic Republic of Congo (used to be Zaire). Reading his book is like reading pages from my own journal - his experiences are very similar to mine, and often he describes them better than I do.
So, if your summer reading list isn't already full, check out The Ponds of Kalambayi at your local library. It will be like spending a week with me, but you'll save a bundle on airfare. :)
